50 and beyond

The mundane life of an over 50-year-old blogger

The winning streak

I started on Duolingo last December

I spend hours on my mobile phone daily. I use a bible app daily. I use Spotify when I practise my drumming. I play Spotify when I’m driving and the radio is too boring. I learn Japanese on Duolingo (and that takes up quite some time!). Every night, I chill by watching drumming clips and dacshund clips. I play Knotwords and GridWords and I even subscribe to NYT so that I can play word games. And when I crochet, I listen to Audible books.

I recall D1 once giving advice to D2 on how to curb his phone usage. He said to stop playing games that have no ending. Some combat games go on and on, I think. So does Minecraft, I think. D1 said play games that have an ending. And when the game ends, it’s easier to stop playing.

I discovered lately that I get affected by this particular feature that all my game apps have. It’s called the STREAK. The apps compel me to continue my streak. If I miss a day’s game, I can still get to maintain my streak if I don’t break it for the next seven days. Well, something in me wants to keep the streak going.

But I think this must stop. I have limited time. There are so many things I want to do but I don’t seem to have the time. I need to prioritise.

So, I am gonna give up my streaks.

Here goes, friends. Maybe in a later post weeks or months down the road, I will be able to tell you that I have conquered the lure of the streak and have spent the time I gained by not playing games, on drum practice. And maybe my drum skills will finally improve noticeably.

About Me

I turned 50 last year! I used to think that 50 is middle-aged, but actually, since the life expectancy for females in Singapore is around 86, I have already lived more than half my life span.

Similar to my old blog https://hdbtaitaidotblog.wordpress.com/, this blog is a platform where I express my observations, thought and feelings about anything that interests me.

Welcome to my ordinary world.
