50 and beyond

The mundane life of an over 50-year-old blogger

Audio book review: Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up (by Alexandra Potter)

Just based on the title of the book, I originally didn’t want to even sample this book. But the reviews were good, and so, I clicked on Sample This. Hmm, I liked the voice of the narrator Sally Phillips. She didn’t sound bimbo and her pitch wasn’t sharp and piercing. So, I gave it a shot and downloaded the audio book.

Loved it.

I love that there wasn’t any sex in it. Well, not explicit, anyway. I’m tired of reading books with the obligatory sex scene to draw in the audience. You know how uncomfortable it is to listen to a sex scene when you’re driving and your sons are in the car listening to the book as well?

The one thing I didn’t really like was the inclusion of a lesbian who woke to her sexuality. Was this added, in place of the obligatory sex scene, just to ensure that the book was inclusive? Cos it didn’t quite fit into the plot that seamlessly.

I enjoyed the book because the story was realistic. I liked how the handsome heart throb wasn’t the answer. I liked it because the star of the show was an elderly woman. I liked it that it was not the standard happy ending; it was a realistic happy ending. Sorry, I can’t be more specific than this, but I don’t want to give away too much.

Listen to this if you enjoy feel-good books, and you don’t want intense emotions like in Marian Keyes’ books, but find Sophie Kinsella too frivolous.

About Me

I turned 50 last year! I used to think that 50 is middle-aged, but actually, since the life expectancy for females in Singapore is around 86, I have already lived more than half my life span.

Similar to my old blog https://hdbtaitaidotblog.wordpress.com/, this blog is a platform where I express my observations, thought and feelings about anything that interests me.

Welcome to my ordinary world.
